character; Aoi Kioku.
series; In Memorium (original 'verse).
age; 16 years old, although stunted growth makes her appear much closer to 14 or younger.
gender; female.
species; human with an artificial soul.
appearance; At about 4'10", Aoi is does not have a very commanding presence. She's petite, physically weak despite attempts to keep in shape, and her left arm is perpetually in a sling, only adding to the defenseless little girl image she projects. Her eyes are extremely blue - perhaps explaining her name - while her hair is a fiery red. The cut would almost be considered a mullet, were it not for the fact that the bottom part is almost always tied back into a braid that ends at about her knees. Having moved to the big city, Cicardum, two years ago, she's quickly adopted the trendy fashions... whatever they may be at the time.
Due to the abnormal amount of power she processes and uses daily, her growth is stunted. Her body has enough trouble keeping her healthy; allowing her to continue growing is almost an afterthought.
Aoi is played by Suou Pavlichenko of Darker Than Black.
psychology; Though made in the image of another, Aoi is very much her own person. Cheerful and enthusiastic, she approaches many things with an optimism that borders on naïvety. Her sheltered life and natural intelligence make her a bit clueless about how relationships work, although she tries her hardest to make them work without awkwardness getting in the way. A bit of a know-it-all, especially when it comes to magic and magickal theory, with some justification to back it up, although she rarely claims to be learned in a subject she really isn't.
All things considered, Aoi acts appropriately to what is expected of girls her age. She's interested in the latest fashions and learning how take care a household (though more for her own benefit than that of possible future beaus). Her attention is easily gathered by something new or interesting.
Among her new-found friends, Hans is the most important to her by far. He took her in and allowed her to grow into her own situations at her own pace; something she is eternally grateful for. She sees him as a pillar of support, and relies on him more than she would care to admit. Thanks to old man Kioku (and his twisted, rotten little mind), she sees little problem with a girl her age living alone with a man in his mid-twenties, no matter how innocent the situation may or may not be. In this area, it's possible to say Aoi is conditioned to see immoral acts of love and passion as something romantic and not at all wrong.
While it would seem her personality is in fact close to that of the original Aoi's, as old man Kioku had intended, the little differences are the most important. Her favorite color is red; her predecessor's was blue. Aoi likes to explore urban areas; her predecessor preferred people-watching.
The sudden passing of her grandfather has left her feeling a little bereft in the new world she's found herself. The permanent loss of use in her arm is something she's entirely unsure how to handle, and so tries to make the best of it without dwelling. This doesn't always work, but her the effort is there. However, she keeps a brave face and makes every attempt to fit in and grow up properly—just as her grandfather would have wanted.
other skills / abilities; A magickal prodigy, Aoi is capable of several spells and magickal feats even master magicians find difficult to perform. The sheer power she has within her is enough to scare off some magickally-sensitive animals and monsters when she readies some sort of spell. This is because souls themselves are what power the universe (in fact, the multiverse) in Aoi's world. Being made up of so many has given her power of god-like proportions... or, she would have that much power, if it were not for the living seal on it that goes by the name of Hans Fahrling.
While her physical fighting prowess is surely lacking, she makes up for it with ingenuity in her spells and an agile body. On occasion, she also uses seals on the joints of her left arm to allow her to move it like normal. This expends magical energy, as she's prompting its movement as if through puppetry, instead of actually using it, and so she doesn't do it very often since Hans dislikes frivolous use of her magic.
She also understands Atrian sign language, thanks to Hans.
other weaknesses; Several. She's a physically weak teenage girl whose left arm is completely useless. She knows enough to dodge most attacks, but lacks the ability to follow through with some sort of counterattack.
The more magic she uses, the higher the risk she has to lose another limb, but unless she casts several types of great magic over a short period of time, this likely won't happen for another several years. On that subject, her lifespan is expected to be much, much shorter than an average human's.
history; Twenty-five years ago, a man named Orfeo lost the love of his life. The woman's name was Aoi, and she and many others died during when several, usually-benevolent monsters rampaged across their town. Orfeo, however, cared only for Aoi, and was driven mad with the grief and loneliness - they had been unable to have children and neither had any relatives to remember her by. Quietly, a whisper of a hope reached Orfeo's ears: a magician of the Order had recently been exiled for proposing the use of alchemy, a debunked science, in the transmutation of the soul, essentially creating life. Everyone else saw the magician as insane, yet Orfeo sought him out, pleading to hear his theories and aid in research. The magician, suspicious at first and then elated to have an audience, accepted Orfeo's offers.
Years passed. Orfeo concocted his own plans under the nose of the magician he studied under, and once their preparations for their first real attempt were complete... Orfeo murdered the magician. It was with the deceased magician's power that Orfeo began the process. He finished it with the preserved body of his lover, holding onto madness-tainted hope that her soul still lingered within it. Miscalculations arose, one after the other, overwhelming Orfeo with little time to resolve them all. If the transmutation failed now, he would lose everything he had been working toward; his lover's body would only last through one transmutation. Panic-stricken, he began a ritual that none had previously attempted, drawing in as much power as he possibly could in order to draw in enough to stabilize the soul. In the process, he unwittingly collected the souls of those in passage between lives and even the souls of those still alive and in proximity.
Several hundred people died on that night of April 1st. Only one was born.
Orfeo named her Aoi, believing the child he had created to be the reincarnation of his lover. He vowed to care for her and raise her until the time that they could be together once again as they had been before her death. The power she radiated, however, was more than he had ever accounted for - to keep it in check, he went as far as turning his entire self into a seal on her power to protect her.
The day came and with it were the suspicions of the townspeople who had awoken to find their loved ones and friends mysteriously deceased. Orfeo, determined not to let these deaths stain his hands - they had been necessary, after all - fled the small town to somewhere that he and his Aoi would not be found.
Skip forward even further, and Aoi grew into a delightful young woman, raised to believe Orfeo was her grandfather and the Aoi before her was her mother. Despite Orfeo's restrictions on her freedom (such as forbidding her to make friends in fear that she might eventually leave him for them), she was happy. She filled her time with studying and magickal practices, at which she excelled far beyond Orfeo's comprehension. Seeing Aoi's delight in such things, he encouraged her to continue her practices with the promise that she may one day be able to join the Magicians' Order.
Each day was one step closer to Orfeo's reunion with whom he believed would become his lover. However... he would never get to see Aoi grow up. On her fourteenth birthday, Orfeo, who had become an elderly man over the years, passed away. With his passing, the seal on Aoi's magic disappeared and her powers began to go out of control and her consciousness faded. It wasn't until the next day, April 2nd, that she awoke to find herself in the debris of her own home. Standing over her was a smiling stranger with kind, violet eyes. He couldn't speak, yet he aided her in finding a temporary place to stay while the authorities determined what happened to the Kioku household.
It was eventually ruled as a gas-leak that had gone unchecked when old man Kioku passed away, and Aoi survived simply because she had been working on her protection magic at the time of the incident. (Which wasn't true, but by then Aoi knew better than to say such a thing and bring attention to herself.) Over the time of the investigation, she got to know the one who had saved her: Hans Fahrling, as he had written down on her diary when he found that she didn't speak any form of sign language. Having discovered a medium of communication, they soon became friends.
After about a month where no one was quite sure what to so with Aoi, Hans proposed that he take her under his wing and they move to Cicardum, where the headquarters of the Magicians' Order was located. No one could claim legal rights to Aoi, and so she was declared an independent. With the new found freedom, she decided to go with Hans out of lack of any other options. When they had finally made it to the big city, they learned that entrance into the Magicians' Order was usually reserved for those of legal adulthood - Aoi's independent status wasn't enough. It seemed that was the end of the line until she grew older. Hans, meanwhile, had found them a means of income through becoming mercenaries: essentially, they were hired to do whatever they were capable of, whenever they were needed.
Shortly after arriving in Circadum, Aoi began to lose feeling within her left hand and it eventually spread into her entire arm, rendering it useless. The doctor proclaimed that the nerves had burned out, but with no discernible reason for them to do so. Hans warned her to stop the everyday use of large magics such as she was used to shortly after that, which was somewhat frightening since he had never been that stern with her before. With the importance of such a warning made clear, she did her best to follow it. Having lived in the city for nearly half a year, Aoi came to make new friends, such as the neighbor, Annette Noble, who liked to sing despite troubles with her lungs, and learned that there was more to Hans than met the eye - his tendency to disappear for a day or two, only to return (sometimes injured) without an explanation was enough to tell her that.
Continued petitioning against the Order finally paid off. Under special circumstances, Aoi took the entrance exam for the Order, and passed with flying colors. Her placement originally put her somewhere within the higher tiers of the Order's hierarchy, yet for some reason, she was placed near the lower-middle. Not that she minded; just being in the Order at all felt like she had fulfilled one of her grandfather's dreams.
Two years after her grandfather's death and her fateful meeting with Hans, and Aoi lives a predictable, if not unexciting, life. Currently, she goes to school among others at the Magicians' Academy as a courtesy, and actually teaches a class or two herself (not that many of her students take her seriously...). Life is life, and she wouldn't have it any other way.
